Just fitted the Rad cage to my XT rear mech, pleased to report that straight away it's made a noticeable difference for the better. Before there was reluctance to change both up and down on certain sprockets, since fitting it feels just like you'd expect from a new XT setup. Highly Recommended !

Good to know. Hoping I don't need one but where did you buy it? just in case

Alu though in it? That'll last about 23 seconds in the mud.

Aye - luckily I'm generally riding in dry, dusty conditions over here but still be interesting to see how long it lasts.

Or it will last about 1 clumsy shift under power before the teeth look like a Curly Wurly

That too although freehub body should last longer though I guess

I went on Oneup's website and bought it direct, link to the page below:

I would highly recommend fitting one going by my experience, the change was instantly noticeable and worth it to make the circa £250 worth of drivetrain feel as good as it should do.

If it's like any alu cassette I've ever seen it'll be utterly laughable.

I was planning on getting a Hope 40t when I did the X1 conversion, but to be honest I've been fine with a 34t on the back

Maybe that will change when the winter racing season starts for me

Why is a 40t aluminium cassette expander ring worse than an aluminium front chainring?
I can understand a 16t ring not lasting long in aluminium.

It's not, I'd say, except for the fact they're generally thinner.

Got the one up 42t and 16t in the post today. Impressed with the quality, easy to fit, haven't sorted the chain and indexing yet will post a bike in the your mbs section when I do, really pleased with the simplicity of 1 by 10 - so long as it works! :)

All done :D:D initial quick road test verdict is it seems really good :D:D with the 16 installed in place of the 15 & 17 there is no noticeable jump in the gears and no issues getting into the 42 cog. Chain line seems fine too with it just in the big ring position.

I was all ready to order a Hope t rex today and 16t xt ring from Rose. What has put me off is the thought that replacing a cassette in future will cost me nearly £100 instead of £35.

Assuming the 40t hasn't worn as much though there's no real reason you can't stick it on a new cassette. You'd need a 16t too.

Won't the 40t wear at least as quick as the rest of the cassette if it's aluminium?

Still a lot cheaper than an xx1 cassette!

I notice Hope rings are Shimano or SRAM specific, do they shift much better that the alternatives?

In my opinion there is not much difference between the one up and hope, however I found the hope is a marginally quicker and slicker shift both up and down
