Squeeky front disk brakes

Hi,
I picked up my GIant Anthem from my local bike shop after having some indexing done.
First time i squeezed on the front brake it screeched like a banshee. The pads also had little purchase.
I took the bike back to the shop and the assistant seems confused as no work had been done to the front of the bike.
So could some substance have got onto the disk and effected the pads? Is the remedy to clean the disk and sand down the front pads?

If they were working properly before going into the shop I'd be going back and politely asking them to replace the pads and clean the rotor. Sounds like they've got some oil or other contaminant on the brake.0
