Pedal change from Shimano R540?!

Hello there,

I recently bought myself a road bike, and some Shimano R540 pedals. My issue is, the lack of a good front lip on the R540 making them a bit of a pain to clip into.

I was looking for a replacement. Would any of you recommend the Look Keo Max 2 pedals, or the Shimano Ultegra pedals? Both seem to have better front lips to latch into.

Thanks

If you have the budget consider Speedplay Zeros. I previously used Keo pedals on both road bikes but find the Speedplays much more secure due to amount of =/+ float you can get with them and a whole lot easier to clip in and out of. Now have them on both road bikes and gave the Keos away.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • Sadly, I don't think I could afford the Speedplays. What did you think of the Keos when you did have them?

Had both Keo easy and Keo classic pedals and find them excellent.

You need to be aware that they supply different coloured cleats with different degrees of float. Black cleats have 0 float, grey have 4.5deg and red cleats have 9deg.

I have tried the reds and could not get on with them. I am currently riding the grey cleats and find them ideal.

    Hello!

I recently decided to change from the R540's too as I thought the same and wanted an all round better contact point between my feet and my bike....

In the end I went for Shimano 105 5800 SPD-SL pedals that cost around £57.99......at first it did not seem like they were much different....but you could still feel the better quality and they are weighted too.

After a few rides now I can tell they are better, a larger base, better connection to the road and I would recommend. They are more of less identical to the Ultegra model from what I have heard, just like 20g heavier....

    Hope this helps.

Before I tried the Speedplays and out of ignorance of other systems, I thought they were OK other than the usual difficulty clipping in on uphill starts. But since switching to Speedplay I'd never go back. Yes they're expensive, but not much more than Keos. You can pick Speedplays up for £119 if you shop around which is around the same price as Keo Blades. Try Pedal Pedal for what I found the best bargains.

Every colour of the stainless are in stock at £105, unless you mean the team green ones that are more expensive?

I wouldn't go for anything other than black anyway, the others just look dirty after a while.

Team green on both of my bikes. Yes they get dirty and on reflection, a cheaper black set would have been sensible considering you don't see them once you're clipped in. But, a few quid extra was all both sets cost me.

I like the team green ones, but there's £30 difference in the price at present!

I got the Shimano PD-R550 SPD-SL for £32 and cant tell the difference between them and the Dura Ace pedals on my other bike.

Find both easier to clip into than the Look Keo Max 2 that I had previously.
