Rear shock sizing

Hey up guys and gals, just a bit of techy advice please.
I want to upgrade my lads rear shock from a basic coil that came with it to an air shock. The bikes about 10 years old now but the frame is good and I've upgraded most of the other components like derrrailers and cassette and brakes. Just want to give him a decent shock now.
I can't find any info on the coils so how do I work out the length and size of shock to replace. I'm looking at a shock but it gives me 2 different shock lengths and 2 sizes, so how do I work out which is best.
Cheers

And in the faqs we have viewtopic.php?f=40073&t=12678279"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

ok so that's how I sort out the length (I had sort of figured that to be honest), but what about the 'size'? I have the option of 38mm or 50mm. What's all that about?0
