If anyone is interested in a rear facing bike camera I signed up to the FLy6 kickstarter and received by light / camera combo thing the other day. Here is some footage cycling around London. I think it is good for commuting but the quality is not quiet there as an action camera.

  • The footage looks great. How big is the lens? I've been looking for something like this. Can you fit it onto the front of the bicycle?

Compared to my two year 1080p GoPro Hero 2, quality does not look great, compared to my Sony AS100 it looks awful.
It should be noted, YouTube's codecs will not help and I do not know what you encoded it with before uploading.
For a rear camera image quality is not as important as a front facing camera but it should at least be 720p.

I thought it looked decent enough quality, good enough to deter motorists from bad driving with some luck

    Ditto,
Had a quick look when first appear on kickstarter and though someone trying to make a quick buck with a look what I just invented product, it’s a £20 eBay camera and a £5 light, certainly not worth the £100 asking price, better off buying a better separate camera and light, if is that dark you need lights on I doubt that camera can capture decent footage in low light condition any way.

How does it cope in the wet and dark?
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

How would a motorist know it was a camera?

Most drivers do not see my camera, even though it is white and stuck on the side of my black helmet.

Good question, I did a bit of reading on it and they said it alerted motorists to it being a camera due to the flashing light which on second thoughts is nonsense. I did think it read decently though

And this video at the start shows it flashing which will possibly irritate a motorist but on the other hand make them take note and give you plenty of room?

If a motorist sees a red light won't they assume it's a red light.

Yeah no doubt, I guess its just handy to have it there as proof should a motorist cause injury.

I emailed them anyway and they wanted 99 plus delivery and said it would be stopped at customs and I would need to pay vat. They also didn't offer the 15 percent discount that every other country appears to get so I won't be buying this after all

You'd be better of buying a good rear light and a GoPro clone(SJ4000 I think there called).

To cover off a few of the questions

The quality is good enough to read a numberplate but I would recommend shouting out the plate if you can as there is also a mic in the camera. The sound was wiped my Youtube who didn't like me using a piece of music, think they use a DRM check on the music so maybe next time should use an old track without DRM.

Not really fair to compare it to a GoPro given the price difference, also I like the ease of use in switching it from bike to bike on my commute.

Have yet ti use it in either to damp or dark but will post once I do.

You can buy a regular LED and a GoPro copy (checkout Techmoan on Youtube) but I like the convenice of the all in one and it chargers off the USB at work.

Would I buy it again, yes but one day will buy a GoPro but until then it is easy to use and works well enough for my commuting needs.

You'll probably find it is poor or useless in low light as the sensor needs to be a BSI sensor and they aren't usually found in cheap camera's, even the current GoPro's do not use them.

That was my immediate thought....all nice and dandy have a flashing red light and camera during the day....when it is covered with spray at night with a red flashing light, things may appear very very different.

Regarding the question on the night time performance this review by the amazing Mr Rainmaker is worth a read, if short of time just scroll towards the bottom of the article for his night time footage.

The night videos look very poor to me and that's on very well lit roads.

    I have one of these.

It's not an action cam, it's just there to record accidents if they should happen. I was recently taken out in London but a seemingly blind driver who then decided it was my fault.

I now have one on the rear and a Garmin Virb mounted up front.

The Virb's picture is far superior to the Fly6's, but they both do what's required. I backed it when it was at a very low price and think it's a bit of a bargain.

Can't wait for Microsoft to release this trick software which should make some of the GoPro footage out there easier on the eye
