New bike advice

Hi all.
Looking for some new bike advice, it will mainly be used for cycle paths/trails/roads and occasional commuting, also some occasional (gentle!) off roading.
Budget is around £300.
Had a read through some of the threads on here and quite like the look of the Rockriders and Calibres but they seem to be in very short supply.
I have managed to obtain a 20% discount at Halfords so think it best to concentrate on their, unless there are strong objections of course.
I have narrowed it down to the Carrera Vulcan at £255, the Voodoo Bantu at £320 or the Carrera Kraken at £320. I may even be able to stretch to the Voodoo Aizan 29er at £360.
Would I be better stretching for the Aizan if I am looking for more speed?
All feedback greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff

The Aizan won't give you more speed per se - it is, however a well equipped bike but rather heavy. Worth having a sit on.
All the bikes you mention are good for the money - you have obviously done your homework! I'd simply go with what feels best to you, you can't go wrong with them at this money.0 -
I've decided on the Bantu but I noticed that Halfords have two different models on there website, I assume one would be an older model. They have different specs, could somebody tell me which would be the better model to try and get.

With the Raidon Air (Dark blue), much much better fork, the Shimano brakes are also better, otherwise they are pretty much the same.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Just picked up my Bantu this afternoon, really pleased with it.
One thing I noticed is that the tyres are CST rather than the Innova stated on the website. Should I be complaining about this, are the Innovas better?0 -
They have changed one rubbish tyre for another rubbish tyre.
Even on bikes costing several times the price of yours original tyres are usually pretty poor.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Ok thanks for that.
I'm looking to get some new tyres anyway, something a little bit more tarmac freindly. Any reasonably priced recommendations?0
