Are you starting in Llangollen? Are you after the hills or just anything? You have worlds end and Horseshoe pass on the doorstep.

    A Snowdonia suggestion.. http://connect.garmin.com/course/5838699

Areas which are good should you wish to make your own, The shelf to Ruthin / Loggerheads / Maeshafan

Llyn Brenig to Denbigh is a nice area to cycle around

Bala is another nice area to head to - Bwlch y Groes for a climb.

  • I'll be based in Llangollen and only have the Sunday morning to make a break for 100k, I am thinking I should fit in some proper hills given i'm near some for once...

Thanks for the help so far.

Up over the pass, down the shelf (great descent but be aware it is narrow) over the top of Ruthin, the climb up to Moel Arthur. Back towards Loggerheads (Cafe if needed) then towards The Steps, up and over worlds end. Then either carry on down (watching out for the stream at the bottom which can ruin a day) or go out across the Panorama route.

Another option, this is coming out of Denbigh to Llyn Brenig, but I would be tempted to go the other way due to the great descent into Denbigh and climb up to Horseshoe via the shelf.

Knowledge of Bala area isn't fantastic but could ask a club mate for a ride if you wanted that way.

Another recommendation for Llyn Brenig/Denbigh area. I recently rode the Rhyl CC 37 mile mountain time trial and it was fabulous. Nothing too steep, but great roads and superb views. Denbigh-Llyn Bran-Llyn Brenig-Cerrigydrudion-Ruthin-Denbigh.
The Brenig Bach audax appears to go over this way from Corwen:

Or you could you construct a ride from bits of the Etape Cymru route, Frank Kinlan's Aqueduct audax or the Fibrax-Wrexham RC 32, which starts outside Llangollen and goes up the Horseshoe Pass.

Aspire not to have more, but to be more.

This is one of my favourite weekend routes. I ride out of Chester so it starts and finishes there, but it's about 100km and takes in some of the best climbs in the area (Steps, World's End, Horseshoe, Ruthin Bwlch, Loggerheads) for a total of 1700m vertical. You might want to add the Panorama, Shelf, Moel Arthur, etc, if you've got the legs for it, in place of the Chester leg. Beautiful scenery to enjoy.

Or you could ride the Etape Cymru course, which you'll find on their website.
  • Cheers all, I have Vermin's loop in the Garmin and i'll see if I need divert to see my Nan on route...
