Shimano 7 Speed Rear Mech

Hi All
I'm looking for a new rear mech for my sons Giant XTC Jr, the rear cassette has a large big cog to make it easier for going up hills, the bike is fitted with a Shimano Alivio rear mech as std and the jockey wheels also seem quite large.
I have a Shimano XT rear mech in the shed that I thought would be spot on but the cage around the top jockey wheel fouls the big sprocket on the cassette, so what rear mechs would work, looking at Alivio mechs they seem to come with different size jockey wheels as well.

You did adjust the B screw to clear the cog?
What size is the big cog?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Big cog is a 34T and yes tried the B screw, screwed it in all the way with no difference, the problem seems to be on the std Alivio there isn't any metal cage above the top jockey wheel and on the XT there is and it's that what fouls the 34 t cog and not the jockey wheel.0

What's wrong with the Alivio mech as standard?0

Just would like to know what else would fit and possible get something a little better for him.0 -
A more expensive mech will make no difference to shifting: lighter, yes - longer lasting. But they are good mechs, I really like them.0

Thank you very much for the reply, I see some people advertising them as 7/8 speed mechs and some as 7/8/9 speed is this correct and you just adjust them on the high low screws ?0 -
Yes. With the right shifter0

7/8/9 speed rear mechs are all the same architecture. The shifter must match the cogs.0
