First time buyer - HELP please!

Hello everybody,
First time on the forums and first time I am looking to properly get involved with biking!
I have a budget of about £300 for my first mountain bike. It'll get some use even though I am just starting out; primarily with off road/trails etc and the possibly of slight road cycling to and fro work.
So where should I begin? Any advice on what to start out with will be much appreciated. I've a separate budget for the cycling necessities and have no problem with that aspect of things.
I've heard specialised are good as a brand, but then it all starts to get a bit technical for me. V breaks, disc breaks? Hardtail or suspension? Arghhhh
