Buying a seat-clamp

I'm looking to buy a new one to ditch the plasticky POS that came as standard on my Boardman.
My Question is - how do I know what size to buy?
Do I measure the diameter of the seat post?
Or do I measure the diameter of the seat tube?
Thanks in advance.

Take your old one off, the size should be written on the inside0

The tube. As that's what it fits round.I don't do smileys.

Thanks, I just checked and there is '35' stamped on the inside of the seatclamp, and I have measured the seat tube and it is indeed 35mm.
So when buying a new seat post I take it you just take the inner diameter measurements?0 -
Yes......Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Or take your seat post out, it should be written on the end of it0

Why not?0 -
Most commonly will be shown as 34.9mm, not 35..I don't do smileys.

Why not?
Expensive and not very good. They don't last long.
Salsa qr clamps are much better.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
If the one you haves work, keep it. Hope are crap.0

I've gotta 34.9 Superstar Simple QR Seatclamp in red. Just replaced it with a Superstar non-QR clamp. Yours for a fiver if you want it."Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

I have a KCNC lightweight one, very nicely made and very light......less than half the weight of a Hope(less) and much more reliable, brass bush not plastic.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Dunno what the fuss is about Hope being crap.
My QR one is fine (bit lumpy maybe) but functions great, does have a brass clamp plate so must be lots of versions out there. Long lever, nice knarly knob but I only paid 8 quid - I can't fault it, like I say the only mark downs I'd give it is its RRP and bulk.0 -
Anyone got any evidence of the hopeless Hopes?
I just use a Nukeproof bolt clamp since getting a Reverb, but I've have 3 Hope QR clamps over the years and none of them have ever given me any problems, despite many, many offs.Current:

I had a Hope, my previous QR had a silly alloy nut that eventually stripped it's thread, bought a Hope that was meant to be about 1 year old, bush snapped after about 3 uses which I replaced with one from a spare (wrong diameter) GT QR (older and less worn), it was OK, but nothing special and very heavy.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

All mine have had the brass bit, so probably why they lasted so long.Current:

And what happens if you always get things used, you don't know who used them before - could have been a Rubez for example.0 -
One of them was used, from eBay... but you could say that about any used part, so you employ some common sense when buying used. Anyway, it was fully functional like the other two and as far as I know the guy who I sold my SX Trail frame too is still using it. I'd happily buy another if I needed QR again. I'm going to go with user error for those who are moaning they broke them.Current:
