I want to store at least one bike hung up 'sideways' (ie with the bike parallel to the wall) in my garage

Any recommendations?

It's just a hill. Get over it.

    i use one of these...

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Peruzzo-CYCLE-S ... B001F0QE9U

the 'prongs' are a bit long if you only need one bike on it, i lopped a bit off each one

it can apply a lot of leverage to the fixings, don't use the supplied screws+plugs to mount it, get some chunky anchor bolts

i mounted mine at just the right height to double as a workstand
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

    Or a couple of these:

They're ideal as you can put one slightly higher than the other to allow for a sloping top tube.

I just use the cheap u-hooks (from any DIY store) and screw them into the rafters.
Condor Super Acciaio, Record, Deda, Pacentis.
Curtis 853 Handbuilt MTB, XTR, DT Swiss and lots of Hope.
Genesis Datum Gravel Bike, Pacentis (again).
    Genesis Equilibrium Disc, 105 & H-Plus-Son.

    Mostly Steel.
