New bar tape over old?

In the interest of thicker handle bars wouldn't cause any issues (other than the additional weight) putting new bar tape over the old bar tape?

    No problem, lots of people will double wrap their bars.

    I just double wrap the tops and leave the drops with one layer of tape.
