Straightening stem/bars

When straightening my stem do I need to slacken off the top cap, as well as stem bolts.

    No,just the stem bolts will do and while the bolts are loose you might as well check/adjust the head set.

    While you shouldn't strictly need to undo the top cap to line up the bars, doing so does make it much easier and seeing at it will only take all of 10seconds to do.....

    Nah - stick the front wheel between your legs and pull the front wheel in the required direction as hard as you can.

    Alternatively, get a mate to hold it and kick the front wheel as hard as you can in the required direction.

    Worked on my Raleigh Grifter, no reason why it won't work on my Ritte.
