Funnily enough I achieved something similar with my small backpack on a commute home from work - it was packed quite full but still light and I put a blisteringly fast time in ... :)

Excellent, I was wondering how I can maintain my commuter rucksack sweaty back on weekend rides without a rucksack and here's the solution :D

I was talking about a similar thing at the weekend whilst watching the moto gp. I was stating that it would be good if these humps stored your water supply thus removing the need for a water bottle and cage.

No idea how many (if any) watts it would save but I thought it was an interesting concept none the less

I've never felt the need for one on the motorbike either myself, perhaps I'm not going fast enough.

You could always fill 'em with helium to help on the hills.

Do front humps, a bit lower down, around about the stomach region, have a similar aerodynamic affect?

    Only on downhills :D
  • It is me that I have "invented" it. Not a truthful invention. I have basically transposed it from motorcycles to bicycles. I am kind of happy with the solution found to enable getting things in an out of that pocket while riding. That is not something found on the motorcycle version.

I can not market it at all. If I would invest even a dine on it the only thing that I would get is to get that pocket tested at that S-Works wind tunnel and then it would be clear to everyone that it yields better then an Evade Helmet but at a fraction of the COST AND WEIGHT.

However, people that used it appreciated a lot the additional carrying capacity, more then the aero performance.
There are plenty of days in which you need to carry around rain coat, leg warmers etc...

Motorcycle racers invented it on 1994. The full grid (excluding Colin Edwards) was using it by 1999. Maybe by 2019 several cyclist will be using it?

Here's a good test... if you look at that photo and don't think "what a complete pecker" then there's something wrong with you.

Motorcycle ones have been around and used for well over a decade or two and they are used as a pocket for fluid supply to the rider or onboard camera equipment. Later ones sometimes house the electrics for the built in airbag system. Motorcycle riders other than when racing look like idiots walking around with them and cyclists would look the same. I can imagine the stunned silence as you walk in to sign on at the club TT.

In any case, it is banned under the UCI rules.

1.3.033 It is forbidden to wear non-essential items of clothing or items designed to influence the
performances of a rider such as reducing air resistance or modifying the body of the
    rider (compression, stretching, support).
Items of clothing or equipment may be considered essential where weather conditions
make them appropriate for the safety or the health of the rider. In this case, the nature
and texture of the clothing or equipment must be clearly and solely justified by the need
to protect the rider from bad weather conditions. Discretion in this respect is left to the
    race commissaires.
The use of shoe covers is prohibited during events on a covered track.
Equipment (helmets, shoes, jerseys, shorts, etc.) worn by the rider may not be adapted
to serve any other purpose apart from that of clothing or safety by the addition or
incorporation of mechanical or electronic systems which are not approved as technical
    innovations under article 1.3.004.

Not if my wife's Strava stats are to be believed...
  • UCI folks take the rain coat out. Call the car. Give the rain coat to the car, and they are done with that.
Everybody else stuff it in one of the pockets. Somebody might think that one additional pocket would help.
Somebody might think that a raincoat in one of those 3 pockets really tax your Cx.
I was some of those people and that aero pocket helps for carrying and speed.

In an ideal world the Aero Hump Pocket should have been some sort of replaceable, snap on item. I couldn't find an easy technical solution for that. I have decided to sew it on. (on one jersey I have hand sewn it. it took 6 hours!)

Spidi it does sell an hydrobag shaped for aeo humps:

Personally I have never tested it. They say that water bottles do not screw up your aerodynamics much.
