Charging Garmin 800 mid ride

For those of you that are having problems with the gps thinking it's connected to a PC when trying to charge, all you need to do is get yourself a power only or data block cable
eg This ones a micro USB

IIRC, they have a pin or wire removed from the lead/plug which prevents this from happening0 -
Is the garmin not a slightly different fitting to a micro USB?0

My 1000 is a micro USB the 800 it replaced was a mini USB, not sure about the other modelsCannondale Synapse 105

not had any problem with my 1000 or 800. Can you not just start off with the external power attached and then use the internal power when the external is trained (which might never happen).0

an update, managed to do the whole way to Dunwich on a single charge with about 30% left to go. I managed to plug in the charger without it resetting and got it up to 70 by the time I left so it can be done.
On a side note, I stupidly pressed save by mistake later on in the ride so ended up with two rides anyway but I did manage to stitch them together so all was not lost!0
