Rear wheel Quick Release (QR)

Hi All,
I'm on the point of buying a 2nd hand bike - however I'd like to check something regarding the QR on the back wheel first. When I tighten up the QR (bike weighting wheels and not in work stand) it can position the wheel too close to the chain stay. I have to make sure that it's actually aligned correctly in the frame before tightening.
This is only my second bike with QRs so was wondering if this is normal - my first bike didn't suffer from this unless it was held off the ground with wheels not weighted (but that I can understand).
I was just a bit worried that perhaps this is not normal.
Cheers.

If you have horizontal dropouts for the rear wheel, as I have on my tourer, it is possible to position the rear wheel too close to one chainstay when you do up the quick release. I turn the bike upside down and make sure the wheel is in the right position before I do up the lever. On some bikes with vertical dropouts you can get the same issue. So yes it's normal. You just have to take a bit of care you have the wheel straight before tightening QR.0
