Just had a message of a mate asking about replacement rim brakes for his 10+ year old Carrera MTB, but I've got no idea when it comes to rim brakes, can anyone give me some ideas to point him in the right direction for a reasonable price please? Cheers. :D

There's a few good options of V-brakes here. I used the Avid Single Digit 7s on my first MTB build and they were very good for a rim brake. I preferred them over any cable discs I've ever used.
The XT one's appear to be good value for money, I've not had any personal experience with them though!

Agree. Some second hand XTs or Avid Single Digits with Speed Dial levers. Look on Retrobike classifieds although cheap enough new.

I have some deore arms and LX levers on my retro-bike, most important thing for rim brakes is quality pads, levers and arms just make it feel a bit nicer.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
