Can't figure out what this large plastic spacer-looking piece is. It's part of brand new Sora Triple crankset but the spacer that goes on the right hand crank is already on there. This piece was sellotaped to the packet container the left crank arm.
I have already fitted the new crankset and all is running smoothly.

Any ideas?

It looks like spacer number 6 on the exploaded diagram?

Bugger, think you're right.. Reckon it's essential to use?! I've unfortunately rounded one of the crank arm bolts slightly so really don't want remove if possible!

It must be included for a reason, maybe for clearance to stop the LH crank arm from contacting the BB cup and stop side thrust movement. Why not buy a couple of new (Clamp Bolt (M6 x 19) & Washer) and re-fit the crank arm. LBS should be able to supply them or an Engineer's supplier's.

My 105 triple has the same spacer on the non drive side. Without it the crank will be too close to the BB and / or you won't have preloaded the bearings sufficiently. If you've rounded one of the bolts you'd be better off removing it and fitting a new one now. SJS probably have the Shimano originals in stock if you don't want to risk a random online purchase of something generic.
