Decent single speed bits and bobs

This is probably a daft idea as the position will most likely be weird etc etc but I fancy giving it a go for a laugh. For a while I have considered building up a single speed bike to use as a winter hack and just for the hell of it.

I've just bought a new time trial frame so after transferring much of the kit from my current TT bike (a PX Stealth) the frame and a few sundries will be left over. So, I have hatched a plan to convert it to a single speed as with rear facing dropouts it won't need any chain tensioner nonsense.

Of the bits I'll need to do is some of them will just be "normal" road bike stuff of an appropriate size (saddle, bars, pedals, brakes etc) and I already have a few of them kicking about. However, some stuff I'll need to get hold of namely some wheels, chain, chainset (maybe a BB too if the one I have (Shimano Hollowtech) isn't suitable), brake levers.

So, question is where can you get the single speed specific bits? A (admittedly very quick) google brings up a few options but they seem to be much more the lower end clunky stuff for cheap city bikes to be bashed about, left outside and stolen. I don't want to spend the earth but neither do I want a pair of wheels that weigh over a kilo each.

Depending on your budget this wheelset's pretty good for the money.

Velosolo do great ss chainrings and other ss parts.

Charlie sells decent ss stuff as well, I use the White Industries freewheel on my ss as it's just a work of art.

    Why go s/s specific?

Use a normal chain set with one chain wheel. Space it out with a washer on each bolt.

Deep rim front wheel with brake track - Planet X or carbon zone.

Track rear to match front for fixed or road to match for freewheel, space out cassette with either £12 conversion kit from Wiggle or cassette spacers for nothing. Line up chain using spacers.

    Job jobbed.

Then set fire to something. Anything.

Good stuff, thanks. As it happens I had a brainwave earlier so went to the garage for a rummage and managed to find a mid 90s 105 chainset and BB all in decent nick, and the set of corresponding wheels with a 7 speed freehub that I'll be able to use with some spacers. To top it off I also dug out some brake levers of a similar vintage. All I'll need now then is the spacers for the freehub and some new bars. Excellent.
