Just building a new bike up for my lad to ride, he has outgrown his current frame,
The frame I have bought has a braze on front mech hanger and the old bike has a band on mech

The group set is 10 speed zenon Campag with a triple chainset.

The price of a front mech in braze on is an eye watering £79

Can I buy a cheaper shimano Claris or tiagra and get it to work ok??

Or will it not work ?? Guessing it should be fine and get me out of an expensive solution as I wanted to keep the triple on there as he is only 11 and needs all the help he can get on hills

Cheers

Why not grind off the braze-on hanger?

Why would I do that to a perfectly good frame ??

£80 for Xenon?! Obviously triples are harder to find but I've just bought a new old stock Centaur mech (non triple) from an Ebay shop for well under £30.

All I could find was a centaur triple
But the shimano ones are loads cheaper, the shifters I have are the 4 up 6 down ones, ultra shift so I was hoping they would be compatible. Unless someone had a secondhand one for sale or swap lol

I had the same problem. I fitted a Tiagra front mech and it worked fine. My front shifter was a Mirage with 7 clicks up and down. When I fitted a Centaur front shifter it worked OK but I could not trim it as well and I would not recommend it.

I tried a 105 triple front mech with nine-speed ultra shift Veloce levers. It worked but not very well. The cable pull was different.

I can see tiagra for £15 so I'm gonna take a chance at that price

    See how I get on

Because your "perfectly good frame" doesn't suit the components you have, so isn't quite so perfect. Think practically rather than throwing money at the problem.

At £15 for a braze on mech I'd have to be daft to butcher the frame

    But thanks anyway
