Anyone used this before? Seems like a brilliant resource if accurate...

  • Used it once. Unfortunately it followed the stated ERD for the Rigida rims I was using, which is about 3mm less than the (not very) standard method. As such the spokes came up too short for me to build the wheel.

On the plus side, I did have a very good reason to go into the LBS and ask the pretty lady behind the counter if she had 16mm nipples.

She did, as it turned out.

An indirect benefit he probably didn't predict when developing that

Oh, and where do you buy your spokes?
  • Depends what I'm after.

Spa cycles do Sapim Race spokes for about 45p each, including nipples, which is a very good price for excellent quality spokes. My summer commute wheels have aero-bladed spokes I bought off an eBay seller in China, they were cheap as chips, and much better than I imagined they would be - I needed straight-pull spokes and these were the only ones I could find.

Do they compare well with DT Swiss Competition?

Never used DT Swiss ones, to be honest, but from what I read there isn't much between them. Similar materials, weight and thicknesses. Certainly the Sapim ones are excellent quality.

    Lovely, thanks.

LR, give me a shout if you want to borrow my wheel building stand. I urgently need to tidy up in the garage, I seem to have bought an old Mini.

Don't let me know that you have a wheel building stand, I may have to borrow it and build some winter wheels that I don't really need (much like, I guess, you don't need an old Mini).
FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future
    FCN 4: Planet X Schmaffenschmack 2- workhorse
FCN 9: B Twin Vitamin - winter commuter/loan bike for trainees

    I'm hungry. I'm always hungry!

That would be very helpful, thanks fella! Might need to borrow your experience while I'm at it.

Haha, no experience yet. But I was given an old Park wheel stand a while ago. Pop round and you can grab the stand. Don't mention the Mini, it will be for the kids to learn to drive in eventually and I haven't told them yet.
I'm going to have a hell of a job tidying that garage.
EKE let me know when and you can borrow it sometime. The stand, not the Mini.

I thought garages were for bikes?!?!?!

    Not that I have a garage. :(
    RIP commute...
Sometimes seen bimbling around on a purple Fratello Disc or black and red Aprire Vincenza.

At it's peak it had 4 bicycles, 2 motorbikes, a barbeque, my tools, various bits of tut and a Triumph Vitesse buried under it all. Not bad for a single garage. Now it will have to hold 6 bicycles, 1 motorbike, my tools and a Mini.
Anybody want some old roof slates?

FYI - Sapim and DT spokes are much of a muchness really. Both very good
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Thanks for that - ordered some Sapim from Planet X as Spa only sell silver!

Here's another one which I used recently:

Might be worth cross-comparing if in doubt.

I've used Edd to build a couple of wheels, it was accurate

To buy spokes I usually use either Spa or the German shop starbike.com
