Best all around road bike 1600-2200 price range

I am sure this type of question has been asked many times, but for 2014 what do you guys think is the best road bike to buy for around 1600-2200 US dollars? High spec aluminum? Mid range Carbon? Used high spec carbon?

Some bikes I was think about were:
Trek madone 4.3
Trek madone 2.5
Specialized tarmac sl4 sport
Specialized allez race
Giant tcr
The list goes on

What sort of riding do you do?
What's the intended purpose for the new bike?

Cycling Plus magazine do a bike shoot out for that price range every year. Track down a copy (you can get it on itunes) and that should give you some good ideas.

I had a madone 4.5(2013) but sold it because it was too big. I would use it mostly for club rides and the occasional race.
