Can anyone point me to any cycling related articles on this type of training-looking to mix things up a bit,not looking for a substitute for getting the miles in,just a bit of variety.any thoughts gratefully received.

    Do searches for
high intensity interval training - HIIT
    burgomaster intervals
    gibala intervals

But you can also just design your own.
Be careful when riding outdoors to be aware (and wary) of traffic and other dangers - don't get so involved in 'pushing hard' that you get into trouble.

Thanks Jay-I've been looking-seems it's fairly critical to give it maximal effort, which might be a bit challenging on the road-but found some cycling specific sets with suggested gearing etc which i might try.

Just try reverse intervals where the recovery period is less than the full effort period. A simple warm up, 1 minute hard, 30 secs easy repeated between 6 to 12 times followed by a cool down should see your heart rate rise significantly.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
