Anyone bought a new unboxed Canyon on eBay from Rotherham?

Hi,
I was looking at a new Canyon Aeroad listed on eBay at the moment in Rotherham, it's new but unboxed, looking at recent ended items there has been a number of similar bikes sold recently all in Rotherham but with a number of different seller ID's, although adverts are very similar and some of the contact numbers are the same as well as locations in the photos. Also no feedback for any of the sold bikes.

Pretty sure it's a scam of some sort so was wondering if anyone had any dealings with any of the sellers or had bought one of the bikes ?
Thanks

Looks a bit dodgy to me, you could always let Canyon UK know to check, I'm sure they would be interested

Looks like the seller has multiple eBay ids (mazi3, mazi4) and has changed id names in the past and has different mobile numbers for different listings, definitely seems fishy.

I'd not buy a bike off ebay without inspecting it. This one has all the makings of a scam. Walk away !

The vendor says cash on collection only. Also included his mobile number. The photo displayed shows it to have been taken in the UK (electrical sockets are always a good clue), so unlikely to be a scam in my opinion.

However, you do need to satisfy yourself that it is a genuine Canyon, and I'm not sure how you do that.
  • Pretty much decided to walk away, I suppose I'm more worried that it's stolen more than anything else.
Thought that it would fly at that price but maybe most people are a bit weary.
    Cheers

None of that makes any difference. SIMs can be swapped and the presence of a three-pin socket on the wall is not a guarantee of a seller's integrity. Of course it's a scam.

I really don't folow your reasoning. The seller will only accept cash on collection. So, you agree to buy based on the description and photos. You take your money and go and view the bike. If it is as dedcribed you buy it. If it's not you don't.

Finding it hard to work out where the scam is taking place. Its not like you are sending your dosh via western union, thinking you are purchasing a bike which is advertised as being in Rotherham yet was photographed leaning against a garage door in the USA somewhere.

I'm interested in one of these but struggling to figure it out, the yorkshire location made me think something to do with the tour as they were giving them away in the tv comps but i see he has mountain bikes as well, not sure where the scam is other than getting mugged of the cash when you turn up or that the bikes are copies, who would copy a full bike? and surely it would be specialized or a giant not a canyon? he could just be avoiding ebay fees with the multiple i.d's etc and also trying to stay under the radar from canyon. any more thoughts or anyone purchased one?

I was looking at this yesterday. Completely the wrong description. And not really even that cheap.

I dont think that one is the same guy, as he only offers cash on collection and all in sheffield/rotheram area.

Agreed. But looks like a scam to me.

Or, rather, you'll be annoyed when it turns up without SRAM Red and R Sys wheels

A reasonable question would be to ask how there are listing s with similar bikes, different username, but the same contact number. See what he says.
  • I spoke to one of the guys, he gave me some story about his mate had bought it then lost his job before it was delivered so now needed to sell it. Said he had the receipt and you could see it but he could not gave you it.

My worry was that there stolen. I wonder if they work for the courier service canyon use ?

Noticed that one of the sellers has now got positive feedback for one of the bikes.

If you had a brand new bike from Canyon and decided once it arrived you didnt want or couldnt afford it why wouldnt you just send it back and get a full refund - they have a 30 day refund policy.

And i never trust this "selling for a mate". Its not exactly hard to set up an ebay account and take some pictures. It can be done on a smartphone in a couple of minutes

    Def seems dodgy

Never mind that if you are so computer illiterate that you can't set up an Ebay account then how likely is it that you would manage to buy a Canyon bike in the first place?.........

My guess is the bikes are purchased from Canyon with Stolen/fraudulent credit cards.

That would be why they cant be returned and why the buyer will only accept cash

Could be right. Though I'm not sure why the typical fraudster target Canyon, particularly with their waiting times!

    I've emailed them anyway.

The midlands seems to be a major supplier of New in box Canyons. MissCorina has been selling them for some time.

I doubt they are interested. I seem to recall Canyon(UK) had some bikes pinched some time back. After the insurance pay-out the matter is closed for them if not the insurance company.
It's pretty clear to me those bikes have entered the usual pile them high sell them cheap vendor network.

    As the above.
I went to buy a garmin once in london. Guy pulls up in a blacked out huge bmw, gets out looking very much not like a cyclist. I have a look at the garmin still in its box. I said whats the story with this then? You know and i know somethings not right. He said it was bought on a fraudulent credit card and said tell me what you want i will go buy it and you can pay me "what you want" i then saw about 30 garmin 800s in his boot and thought id seen enough and walked away,

Id say these bikes are self same thing. Easy to buy on the net and suprisingly easy to sell off and not very traceable. Us normos leave a paper trail everywhere but when you have access to fraudulent cards it seems literally a licence to print money.

Steer well clear as they will flag up one day as being obtained using theft by deception.

Love that team bike though. Shame as it will prob be sold off for bits and anything with numbers chucked in the bin :-(

Canyon are watching them - be warned, if you were so foolish as to buy them... as they say, if its looks to good to be true, it is !

This is exactly right. There is a gang in Sheffield and environs buying Canyons with stolen cards and selling them on eBay. I cannot believe they haven't been caught yet.

Last November I thought with eBay's buyer guarantee it couldn't go wrong, so I bought a CF SL in these circumstances. When I got the bike I sent the frame number to Canyon to see if it was dodgy, and it sure was. I think the bike is still rotting away in Kentish Town police station, and I only got my money back from eBay about a month and a half ago.
