Am I Very Bad??

Ordered a Garmin Edge 200 for a VERY good price from Amazon today.

Arranged for delivery to my work rather than to home.

Hoping my good lady wife won't notice it or I will be in the dog house again for spending "more bl**dy money on that bike."

I don't complain at how much she spends on her daily lunch outings (Cheshire ladies who lunch after all).

Am I being devious or is this perfectly acceptable behaviour as I don't want to upset her

An edge 200 for a very good price is probably only the same as a nice lunch with wine anyway.

Yes you are a very naught boy.... I think you should go sit on the naughty Saddle (Step) for at least 3hrs.

The only problem sending stuff to your work is that you eventually have to take it home.

You should stand up to your wife and tell her that it's your money to spend as you damn well please. As a married man myself, however, I salute your tactical cowardice.

Get your money arrangements sorted/agreed so you each have a set amount to spend on yourself ( bikes, lunches, whatever). Avoids problems down the road.

She Who Must Be Obeyed will find out and then the beatings shall begin.

Seriously? My wife stopped moaning ages ago about how much I spend on the bike. Now she doesn't ask at all when new things arrive. When she used to moan (although my gf at the time) I told her it was my money and I'll spend it how I wish.

Although I do ask her about any big purchases to which she always say no but then I just keep mentioning it matter of factly for a few weeks until it's ingrained in her psyche that it's going to happen...then buy it.

To be honest mate I just spent £250 on a pair of sidi's so your wife should thank her lucky stars she's not married to me 8)

Yep same here. My wife has pretty much given up hope and has taken the approach of 'if you cant beat them, join them' and asked me the other day to buy her a bike!

  • Mate of mine suggested that the way to avoid a fallout over how much you spend on your bike, was to buy a fairly inexpensive bike, and then upgrade it over time with similar looking kit. That way, your wife wouldn't notice.

I think he's probably got over the divorce by now...

  • Funny thing, I did EXACTLY the same when I got my 500. Which I just happened to buy from Amazon, for a very good price! I had already bought an Etrex, so I thought it wise not to say anything :)

If you have a computer already, and your wife isn't into bikes, I wouldn't get too worried.

Yes you are very bad, Amazon are scum and don't deserve your monies.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.
  • I really don't understand these types of relationships. If you've earnt the money, spend it! My other half & I spend money on what we want after all our bills etc are paid.

By this, can we assume you're in a same-sex relationship?

No, I'm just not controlled by somebody else! If my girlfriend wants to go and buy some shoes or whatever, then go for it, I'm not going to moan at her.
  • Despite my earlier posting (which is true by the way), I do get why this is an issue.

I'm not sure it's about being controlled by your other half. My Mrs isn't into bikes, nor any hobby that involves expensive kit, so she doesn't really get why you have spend the kind of money you do. When I bought my last bike she assumed that it would only cost a couple of hundred quid, and was stunned when I said it would cost over a grand.

I like to think I'm otherwise good value and don't spend too much money on other things, but then again we're not so flush that the money I spend on biking wouldn't be helpful. So while the Mrs was aware that I recently bought some new wheels, I might not have mentioned that they cost the best part of £400. So far this seems to work...

    Now you're catching on!

To be fair, my wife's pretty good and tends not to give me a hard time. She spends her money on things she likes and I spend my money on things I like. It's like Roberto says above, though: non cyclists just don't quite get what cycling gear can cost. A few years ago I told a mate that I was thinking of spending a grand on a new bike and he nearly had a heart attack. I wouldn't dream of riding something so cheap now.

My solution is to say I got it as a bargain and that I will obviously be able to sell something on in return. That and giving away the little packets of Harribo from Wiggle helps :)

My wife doesn't moan too much, delivered in the last two days have been a set of wheels, cassette, chain, tubes, tyre and a pair of cages (all the bits needed to put another bike back on the road...). I have two jobs/businesses, the main one pays for the house, bills, cars, food & kids, and then the money from the second one I can pretty much do with what I like. She also works part time (when not looking after aforementioned kids!) and spends that money where she likes.

Only downside is that balancing two 'jobs' and a family means that I don't get to spend as much time on the bike as I would like.............
