Exploding tyre

Afternoon

So, heading back from a ride on Saturday & the rear tyre went pop (or rather a very loud bang!).

I noticed (apart from the 3 inch hole) that the rest of the tyre looks pretty warn near the rim (you can see each side of the hole in the picture).

The tyre has done about 1500 miles & been on the bike about a year.

Is this just normal wear & tear, or have I not located the tyre on the rim properly or not running enough pressure?

Good excuse to get some new Nobby Nic Evo Snakeskins, but don't want to knacker them prematurely!
