3k bike for a mate!

I've been asked by a mate to help him find a new bike as he doesn't know all that much about bikes yet.
I obviously have my favourite brands and bikes but I'm keen to make sure he ends up with the right bike for him and not just talk him into buying a bike that I really like.
Like all of us he is keen on a bargain and willing to consider 2nd hand too or even get me to do a frame build if necessary. However I have persuaded him that getting the right bike is more important than getting a bargain.
He hasn't been riding that long but is learning fast.
He is 5ft8" and about 14 stone (possibly a bit less)
Currently he has a boardman team FS and likes the length of the bike but wants something a bit sturdier and that will tackle descending a bit better (you could say a bit skill flattering).
He has ridden my large Blur LT and liked it but standover was an issue!
He has also ridden a medium Yeti SB66 carbon I had on demo and loved it!
Basically I think he will prefer a longer bike than something short like a medium Blur LT also something with 140mm/160mm travel but nothing to heavy.
So what would you suggest I get him to look at??? any links to second hand bargains would be good. or links to new bikes even!

Somewhere on crc they're seeking an sb66 frame in size small for very cheap so you could check that out...0

They are not very long... all canyons i've sat on are short for there size, sat on a large for there (180) bike the other day and it was shorter than my Medium Mondy dune XR.
Some people love there canyons i'm not a fan. get him to sit on someones first!0
