Riding the Giro and the Tour 2014

I went and watched every Tour in the 90's. I was always struck by how exhausted the mainly Italian Giro riders were - but who added a certain frisson to the race - I'm thinking Bugno et al
However Bugno won the Giro 1990 after taking the first stage and holding onto the cerise jumper thereafter - he still got 3rd at that years Tour. This was trhe exception to the rule. Most Giro riders were well down - playing heroic supporting roles to much fresher team mates.
that was all a different era and many things were possible....
There is a certain folklore in cycling that the Giro is going to kill your legs off until Lombardy! especially if too young. I read somewhere that one rider felt he never recovered from the Giro!
Is this still the case? Surely a more even field and better ideas about recuperation etc make the double much more doable.
Would add a lot if these Giro riders were there again in July
who will be?

I want Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz, Rolland the Lion, Iron Uran & the Colombians.
But I fear science can also clearly show effects of fatigue & we won't see Dorothy till Vuelta....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0
