I'm trying to adjust the increase sag by turning the preload ring anti-clockwise. Trying to do so using my fingers. Ring is so stiff it barely turns at all. I can twist spring on it's own but preload ring does not move with it. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Could be that it's seized or just jammed with dirt in the threads or could be you already have too much preload (shouldn't really have more than 2 full turns).

I found a BB spanner can be the right size to turn them when they're stubborn (I have to put too much preload on to get the shock into the bike then back it off again) or if you have enough room a rag can help get a bit more purchase.

Thanks...does turning the spring on its own do anything?

Not if it's not turning the ring at the same time. You'll have to be careful with that as well and make sure the spring is still positioned properly on the retainer ring at the other end of the shock.

Usual reason for the preload collar being difficult to turn is that it's already wound up too tight. As above, two full turns max.
Have you checked that you have the correct weight spring?
