My mates dad (64 years old), moved to Italy to live in the mountains and spend his retirement cycling.
2 months in and he got knocked off his bike by a driver who decided to take the 'racing line' around a hairpin bend coming down a mountian.
Legs were crushed against a crash barrier (good job too - if it hadn't been there, him and the car would have fallen 500ft.)

He got 'lucky'. After 5 months of physio and surgery he was walking. He was cycling after 9 months.
The doctors said was that it was all down to the fact that he had built up his leg muscles and ligaments from all of the cycling that he had done.
