Hello all,

I am new to road biking and am looking to use it to build my fitness after surgery and for the pure enjoyment of it all!
I would like to enter races etc in time but seriously need to put some miles into my legs. I have a budget of £1000 and would like to get the most 'bang for my buck' as they say. Any advice or help would be greatly received.

Thank you

As someone looking at bikes at the moment ( with a little higher budget ), you cannot really look past the Planet X Pro Carbon....either that or maybe a canyon aluminium for £900.

I ride a Giant Defy 1. The reviews in Cycling Plus put it at the top of a very good field of £1k sportive bikes.

Cycling Active also put it at the top of one of their reviews a couple of weeks ago. Excellent aluminium frame with carbon forks, + mainly 105 kit. I've had mine for 6 months and do plenty of miles on it and have found it excellent.

Look up the reviews and see what you think.

Fu****g hate these threads - what is it one " which £1000 bike" every week??? - there's a search function on these forums.

If I was in the market for a new < £1000 > bike I would be definately looking at Canyon and Rose.

Made in Germany via online ordering system - you cant beat the quality and kit for the price.

    Rose Pro SL 2000. 7.9kg, 105, £846

    Rose Pro SL 3000. 7.6kg, Ultegra, £1142

    Rose Xeon RS 2000. 7.5kg, 105, £1142

    CANYON AL £899 - £1199

    Staying Close to Home:

    Planet X Pro Carbon. 8kg, Ultegra, £999

    Alu Trek 1.5 £800
    Alu Trek Domane 2.0 £900, 2.3 £1100

    Giant Defy 1 £999 Defy Composite 3 £1099

    Specialized Allez, Roubaix SL4 £1150

Try the search facility, this is a F.A.Q.

Suppose it depends on how your buying.
I chose Cyclescheme route and my LBS supplied bikes so got it down to the Cube Peloton Race and the Defy 1.

Online wise I looked at the rose above and the Canyon. Planet X have a shop in Sheffield so at least you can try it there.

Paying £1k without seeing how the bike fits you though is a big gamble.
  • Planet X are great value you money and I think you'd do well to get better for your budget. You certainly won't get ripped off that's for sure.

My back is problematic, so a full on hardcore bike isn't on for me.

I've got a Ribble Gran Fondo with 105, which I love, and I'm just about to pull the trigger on a Specialized Secteur Sport (Roubaiz geometry) for the commute - non carbon frame so it won't melt in the rain, sort of thing.

My colleague has a Spesh Alliez and really likes it. A couple of others have the Planet X and they swear by them - in fact rode L2Paris on them.

Love riding my PX but my commute is on my old secteur and its great, use it like a cx bike across muddy nonsuch park and its still going strong 10k in.
Life isnt like a box of chocolates, its like a bag of pic n mix.

    +1 or look for a secondhand CAAD10.

the caad 10 has the best aluminium frame out there that will outdo a lot of the cheaper carbon frames. a great bike indeed.
