8 speed to 9 speed...

I got a pair of old 8-speed XTR shifters on at the moment, are the 9-speed ones any better mechanically?
The old 8-speed ones work fine, its just you can change up 2 sprockets too easily, maybe since they were manufactured in 1995 the spring is getting a little weaker? There isn't any "feel" to the clicking. Always loved these shifters though, changing up a sprocket is like pressing a button, even with XTR from as far back as 1995.
I don't know whether to upgrade to 9 speed (would insist on XTR shifters again) or leave it and somehow get the current shifters "serviced" if thats possible.
Of course upgrading from 8 speed to 9 speed you have a thinner chain.
Can 8 speed chainrings take a 9 speed chain?
Can a triple front 8-speed mech take that thinner chain?
If I can get away with only buying the shifters, chain and cassette and avoid having to get new chainrings and front mech, I will just upgrade to 9-speed. In fact then I would only need a right hand shifter pod, seen them going on eBay for like £30.
So the stuff there's no escaping buying:
- Right hand shifter pod (9-speed)
- 9-speed chain
- 9-speed cassette
Might need:
- 9-speed front mech (due to thinner chain)
- 9-speed chainset (say it ain't so!)
Its just that I would hate for the 2 shifters to be different.

Not worth the upgrade or outlay, unless you must have an extra gear ratio in there.0
