Probably, however that's also CAR UP.

when the opposite is CAR BACK, you really need to hear the other to be sure what's going on.

We’ve always used ‘car up’ to mean from behind

Different calls for different clubs, e.g. ours are car front and car back.

Only heard 'car back' for the first time yesterday.
Sounded a bit un-thought out' and wondered if people were saying it (on the day, on a sportive) just to make it very obvious for others that did not know what car up meant.

Always assumed people shouting just 'car' were being afraid to commit to up or down (in case they got it wrong) but now feel its probably the best option if people have different meanings for car up.

Up for up ahead, and down for down behind might be better than the other way around as its probably more natural (mentally) for people to blurt out when they suddenly see a car.

Anyway, thats that sorted out, cheers.

Car up, car back in my club. I've never heard car down...
Similarly, elbow flicking - everyone I ride with does it one way in chaingangs, but I was told on my track bike once I was doing it wrong!?

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

If you're using your elbow for anything that needs to be starred out, you're probably doing it wrong!

Yes, much easier to say and understand than any of the two word phrases.

Not sure I agree but its a moot point.

Surely car front and car back cannot be confused?!

In our neck of the woods it is:
Car up - coming up behind you
Car down - coming down the road towards you

The only variation I have heard is that some of the old timers use oil up instead of Car up etc
I have only two things to say to that; Bo***cks

It's obviously easier to quickly shout a single short word than two short words, especially if you happen to be out of breath, and the fewer words you use the less chance there is of someone misunderstanding (eg if you only hear "car" and not the "up" or "down"). More importantly, as your own question in this very thread shows, there can be ambiguity around the "car up/down" options, whereas "nose" and "tail" are almost impossible to misunderstand.

Nose and tail seem very drawn out words when you actually say them.
Carrup almost seems easier and quicker to say.

That makes me an old timer then...don't say oil (as in oil can) anymore because none of the young people understand it. I also now use "front" and "back" simply because this clear and unambiguous about the direction of travel of the threat.

Surely it's the guy/girl at the front of the train that calls the car coming towards the group and the the guy/girl at the tail that calls the car approaching from behind? There can't be too much confusion from which direction the car is approaching, no?

I cycle in a group that simply calls 'car' for a car approaching from the front and 'car back' for a car coming from the back. 'Car up' is used when the car then actually starts to come past the rear gunner.

Yeah, it's usually obvious where the car is. I use 'car up' (as in up ahead) and 'car back' myself, as do most of those I've ridden with, although some use 'car up' for cars approaching from behind.

PS I clicked on the thread as I thought someone had taken out a car - like 'rider down'!

Can't work out whether or not the starred out word is because of the predictive text on my new fecking phone, or the BR swear-filter being a bit short-sighted!

Why do some clubs want it to be as cryptic as possible, meaning newbies probably won't have a clue what's going on?

    Car Front, Car Back.

    They don't need explaining.

Yeah means something different on the track - basically a flick of the right elbow on the road means you want the rider behind to come through, on the track it means you are moving up the banking.
