Hi all

Has anyone used the services of one of the companies who advertise repairs to a Garmin GPS unit at all?? It appears that mine has got a faulty USB port as I cant connect to the computer at all - but it still charges ok. I've tried a new Garmin cable and also tried forcing it into Mass Storage mode to no avail.

Garmin themselves say it is most likely a faulty port but their "repair service" basically means an exchange unit is provided. Normally this would be fine but I have 950 miles of LEJOG data on the unit!! :(

So - any recommendations for somewhere that can repair my Edge 800 at all??

Cheers
Paul (off to order a new Edge 1000 head unit)

Dunno about the 800, but a lot of the garmins use a sort of compression fit of the USB connector to the board, take it apart and check that it's still solid. Also means if the connector is broken you can simply swap it into another 800. I suspect if everything else is working it's going to be one of those physical connector failures and opening it up should be pretty easy. There's videos of 800 battery changing they'll tell you how to take it apart.

    Hi Jim

Just had a look at a Battery replacement video on Youtube and so will try and find a tiny allen key to open my unit up and have a good look at the connector etc. Not sure if any of my mates would want to dismantle their own 800 to try and extract the data from mine! ;)

    Cheers

In the future set the unit to write the log files onto the SD Card. Then USB port issues don't result in lost data.

I wish I'd read about the USB port issues that seem to be fairly common despite what Garmin say about the waterproofing of the cover before saving everything to the internal memory. The Edge 1000 transfers wirelessly via Bluetooth and so I wont have issues in the future - just want to get my LEJOG data off by having my own unit repaired. :(

Woohoo - excellent. Just bought it and looks ideal. Cheapest quote for repair I had elsewhere was £30

    Thanks HFITF :):)

You'll stuggle, its a torx bit you'll need.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Maybe not your issue but for anyone else that might; using a Mac to download/upload data from a Garmin, if the device isn't disconnected properly, the USB port isn't recognised the next time you try to connect. You have to switch the Mac off and on for it to all work again.

News to me - I do eject the drives before disconnecting but on the odd occasion that I've forgotten I've had no problem.

Yep I use a Mac and rarely eject either of our 800s.

My GF has broken the on off switch on hers so also looking for a repairer. Garmin haven't answered my repair request email. They used to be good at customer support.

haha yeah thats true - a search says it is a T6 Torx bit so i ordered one on fleabay yesterday.

For anyone else looking for a repair from Garmin - they dont "repair" as such but supply a replacement unit upon exchange. Flat rate cost is £74.40 posted.

Water ingression to usb connect on unit. Spray in some wd40, get cotton bud and try to clean any " crud" off then leave on a radiator for 1-2 hrs. Mine worked again after that.

Is there no way to copy the files from the internal memory to the SD card?

Have you tried doing a hard-reset? Worked for my 800 when it froze up. Admittedly not the same fault but what have you got to loose......
