I'm a mechanical retard but.... i never run big-big on my road bike because it makes lots of noise and the chain obviously crosses at an angle.

On both 2x10 MTBs that I have owned i have had no problem with big-big combo when I have inadvertently found myself there although I accept it probably does lead to more wear
