Headset creak

Over the last 3 months/400 miles, I have noticed a creaking sound on my Giant Defy 2 which seems to be coming from the headset or handlebars. It is predominantly happening under load, i.e. on climbs, and seems to be getting worse.
Any ideas what this could be and what the remedy is? Is it a simple tightening required or something more fundamental?
The bike is 3 years old and has done approx. 4,000 miles and has been serviced at least annually (if not twice per year) including headset adjustment when required.
Any ideas welcome.

Start at simple - pop off stem cap, check where the bars go into the stem, give quick clean. Re lube and torque into place the stem bolts (nice bit of copperslip or grease in there.
When doing stem bolts back up do them properly - top left finger tight, bottom right finger tight, top right finger tight, bottom left finger tight. Then working diagonally carry on with torque wrench until all torqued in correctly.
Pop out front wheel, take out skewer, clean, grease, pop back in.
Spin wheel and check side to side play to see if its the bearings - if necessary pop another wheel in and see if the noise is still there (thinking about it this should be point 1 but I can't be bothered to re-type this whole post to take account of that).
Pop out forks, clean headset and cups, re-grease, pop back in. 10 minute job.
Also check cleat wear, chain ring bolts, saddle while you're at it - the noise may seem like it coming from one place when its coming from another.
If you still can't see what is going on, set fire to the piece of junk and buy a Ritte with Lightweights.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

Addendum: Could also be dried out spokes - quick fix is to spray all the nipples with WD/similar - this will very temporarily lube them and allow you to check if this is the cause of the noise.
If so, you can either take them all out, grease and rebuild wheel (utter fag) or pop off tyre, tube, rim tape. oil from inside (3 in 1 or similar, let it all settle down then re-install tyre, tube etc.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am
