I've just managed my first solo half century.

52 miles with 3700ft of climbing, averaging 15.1mph.

Having never ridden in a pack/sportive before, what are my chances of covering 80 miles with just over 3500ft of climbing? Does riding in a group make it slightly easier to cover the distance etc.

Should I give it a go ( le petit grand depart next Sunday ) or leave those kind of distances until I've built up to them a bit more.

Cheers.

    That's very good!

Yeah no problems at all! It all depends if the group is at your ability level, if it is, then yes, covering the distance will be easier, but, some of the the time you're riding above your normal level, in order to keep up with the group, you have to recognise when that's happening and let them go.

Nah, if you've done 50 you'll be able to do 80 no bother!

Make sure you eat/drink enough and you will have no bother.

It will be more than "no bother" but you should be able to do it. I would concentrate on pacing yourself - try to get half way without going mad. If a bunch comes by slightly faster than you're going then joining on will be easier but be prepared to do some work at the front. Most sportives I have done, the bunch comes and goes be prepared to do be alone or go slower/faster than you really want

I don't really get the sportive thing but I did one the other week because a couple of friends were doing it, if you get in a bunch you'll probably be able to do the event twice, you just don't seem to use any energy and I think that you could quite possibly read a paper and smoke a pipe.

No problem at all, especially if you are prepared to knock your av speed down 1 or 2mph
