Springs on the quick release

How important are the conical springs on the quick release mechanism? The front one on my bike is bent all over the place.

    They are just there to make it easier to get the axle into the dropouts. Once the QR is tightened they serve no purpose at all.

    Though the obvious question is how on earth did you manage to mangle them in the first place? :shock:

    Putting them on backwards?

    I managed this by not following instructions for SKS Raceblade Longs which state to remove the springs.
