Hi guys, Still looking to build/buy my first road bike since the 80's.
My mountain bike frame is alloy, So is my full suspension and my hybrid.
So why not a alloy road frame ?.
Prices im seeing for frame and forks vary from £250 to £1000.
What the difference ?.
Are we just paying for the name, Just like most things in life ?.
Thanks for your help.
All the best

You'll pay a bit extra for big company names because of R &D and advertising costs, and also for the prestige. What are your riding goals?

  • I'm just looking for a change tbh. I really fancy a road bike. I'm not looking to join a cycling club or doing any racing.
I get so much pleasure out of just being out on the bike. I put my mileometer to zero in January and its reading 1,124 miles. Current bike is a 'boardman Hybrid'.
    Thanks for the help.

You're not just paying for the name but that can be part of it.
The complexity and quality of an alloy frame can vary quite a lot.
Some have basic round tubes with simple welds and the volume of material used will likely be higher to compensate for less than optimum shaping and give a higher factor of safety in case of potential defects. At the other end of the scale are lightweight frames with better quality alloys, highly manipulated thin wall tubes, high quality welds, etc.
The scale of production will also be a factor. Less mainstream products will generally cost more than an equivalent product that sells in much greater numbers - not always true.
