If I wasn't so busy datamining your souls, I'd do a proper starter.

The peloton has let the breakaway go clear and the gap is now close to eight minutes.

The five are: Robinson Chalapud (Colombia), Jose Herrada (Movistar), Winner Anacona (Lampre-Merida), Bjorn Thurau (Europcar) and Nicola Boem (Bardiani-CSF).

I'm calling the break to stay away.

Herrada dropped back but was soon replaced by Haas (Garmin) – after about 70 kms. Then Anacona dropped back. Lead of remaining 4 down to 7 mins.

The two left-hand turns close to another about the Flamme Rouge could be messy if the peloton arrive together (and the roads are wet – not expected but not ruled out). Headwind later.

After the way yesterday played out and before some mountains I can see this being true.

Though FDJ will want the win, would it would be their first GT jersey win.

I wouldn't be surprised. The GC teams and climbing specialists will certainly want a nice easy day ahead of tomorrow (and especially after yesterday). No one in the break is going to stop Matthews from wearing the maglia rosa for the final time tomorrow so OGE will just be controlling the break rather than chasing it.

Then again the sprinters teams know they can just 'relax' tomorrow and Sunday so they might rally themselves for an effort today.

Depends how wet the run in is, I suppose. If it's slippery then I can see the whole peloton calling a truce and letting the break have their day.

Pretty sure Kittel isn't going to win this one

Unfortunately for the riders it has started to rain yet again during the stage.

Maxime Méderel (Europcar) called it a day after 9k. He finished well up there yesterday so doesn't seem to be injury related.

Everyone fights for the front and they all go down?

Today's narrative is the dangerous descent disappointingly distant from the finish.

How do they do amateur racing in Southern Italy in May? With no following ambulances etc it must be tantamount to suicide....

I think young hattersley who posts on here may have just returned from just that. I wonder if he could shed some light on it for us. I would be geniunely interested.

They keep telling us it rarely rains in that part of Italy so maybe that's how. Not a very convincing explanation I admit.

The comment someone made about the Giro being unlikely to return to Ireland after the rain and 'dangerous' roads last weekend is looking increasingly foolish by the day.

With the palava about the tarmac before, I'd pay someone fifty quid to pop by where I live and lay a load of that that they are riding on at the moment

The Cyclingfans tracker has an ace graphic with the break gap in time and km, and their locations on a profile.

    Good screenshots there.

Chaps, you see how the peloton is now? One long line. They are racing a bloc.

    GO GO GO Breakaway.

Farrar spends more time off the bike than on it during a GT.

Time for DS guys in the cars to start shouting at their riders in that breakaway. The chase is on.
