Rear Derailleur

I lost use of my rear derailleur on my way to work this morning. I can click the front shifterall the way up or all the way down but nothing happens to the derailleur. I've tightened and loosened the adjuster but unfortunately that's about the limit of my knowledge. any help on getting it working again will be appreciated.
It's a Tiagra 10 speed if that makes any difference.

Is the cable loose where it attaches to the rear derailleur? Trr and work out what is happening between the shifter, cable and rear derailleur, its not that complicated.WyndyMilla Massive Attack | Rourke 953 | Condor Italia 531 Pro | Boardman CX Pro | DT Swiss RR440 Tubeless Wheels

I have just checked again and the cable for the rear derailleur has become detached from the shifter. Not sure if it's detached or snapped.0

How old is it? In 6 years my 105 has twice eaten the gear cable inside the RH shifter. First time it frayed a lot but I got to it before it broke, second time I ignored the crunchy gear shifts and it packed up completely when it snapped.
Both times I was lucky enough to be able to fish out the frayed remains and insert a new cable.
Upshift all the way (smallest cog / no tension on cable) and then pull on the brake lever and peer inside. You should be able to see if it's frayed / snapped / unseated0 -
It is a very simple job to refit the cable or replace it if the current one has snapped. Look it up on the web via Park Tools or Sheldon Brown and go to it. Failing that a trip to the LBS is indicated.0

Thanks for your advice. I popped into LBS next to my work to try and explain the problem, with the intention of sorting it myself - partly becuase I want to learn more and partly because I didn't want to pay a small fortune.
Mechanic said he'd do it for £5 plus parts. So got new cable, plus gears retuned and chain and casette got a re-lube all for under a tenner. Can't go wrong with that in my eyes.0 -

Sounds like a good LBS Although doesn't help when trying to learn it yourself!0
