New wheels = gear problems

Hi Guys,

I got some new wheels at the start of the year (Pacenti sl23 and Aivee SR5 hubs). It is a 10/11 speed hub that I am running on a 10 speed drivetrain with appropriate spacer. I have had trouble getting some of the higher gears (23 + 25) to run smoothly and so spent yesterday giving it a proper once over.

The problem I have is that I can not get the top jockey wheel to align with the cassette teeth (25) without the rear mech hitting the spokes. I am currently running the mech pretty close (too close for comfort) to the spokes and there is no more limit screw adjustment. It runs rough in this position. This is not a problem I have had before with previous wheels (askiums, DA7850, farsport 38tubs). I have looked at

1. Rear hanger looks straight and seems to align well
2. Changed the mech, makes no different
3. Different wheel (open pro, novatech hub) in same frame gives plenty of clearance
4. Pacenti wheel in different frame gives more clearance but a lot less than the Open pro

Any ideas on what might be wrong. Is it the wheel, ie this is a known thing with wide rims or 10/11 speed hubs? The frame? The 2 just aren't compatible for some reason? Any thoughts are much appreciated

If the mech is moving across far enough to hit the spokes it should be shifting the chain onto the largest sprocket.

Two options:

Either your hanger is bent. Not always obvious when inspecting visually. Have it checked by a bike shop with an alignment tool, or just try replacing it to see if it makes a difference.

Or you're missing a spacer so the cassette is too close to the spokes. I am not familiar with your wheels / hubs since all my bikes are standard Shimano factory stuff.

Whenever I've had a rear mech hitting the spokes it's followed a drive-side spill and replacing the hanger has sorted it out

11 speed shimano hubs with 10 speed cassette 105 and above (not tiagra) need 2 spacers, the 11 speed spacer and the 10 speed spacer. I think the 10 speed one is 1mm and usuall comes with the cassette and the 11 speed one is 1.85mm and usually comes with the hub, so 2.85mm in total. Not sure if the same is true for your combination.

I popped a normal cassette spacer on and things now work a lot better.
