Whatever the defenders of the Police may say, they appear to be in the news for corruption, deaths in custody, falsifying evidence, bullying, sexual harassment, falsifying crime stats, I could go on and name these but we all know what they are.
some of this is from the top down, a few CPO have been suspended or forced to resign, (no doubt with their pensions still intact?) but a lot is from the bobby on the beat (if he/she exists anymore?)

Interesting that a lot of the comments surround what the individual can get out of being in the Police/Met NOT what they can contribute to society.

Another anti police rant. In an organisation employing so many, there will be bad apples and they get reported because it is newsworthy. Undoubtedly there have been instances of corruption in the past. Corrupt officers should be punished, there is no place for them.
As someone else on here could probably explain better, having worked in custody, death in custody is tragic, but there are a raft of safeguards to help to ensure that prisoners welfare is ensured. Bear in mind when people are brought into custody, usually the only person who is aware of underlying health issues is the prisoner themselves, who for whatever reason may not disclose it when asked.
Incidents such as firearms incidents where people have been injured or killed, quite rightly get reported. Some people read these and assume that the police are trigger happy. Look at the stats to see how many instances firearms are deployed and the incident resolved without a shot fired.
As regards losing their pensions. They pay an average 13.7% to their pensions, so why should they lose it - they have paid it. If you got the sack after 20 years service would you expect to pay 13% of your salary over that period as a fine?

    Thats because it's a job.

The horror of someone actually doing a job because it supports them and families

And next week you will all be agreeing that the Police are generally corrupt when some story comes out. There have been too many incidents at the institutional level to give wholehearted and unquestioned support to the Police, such as the undercover infiltrations of law abiding protest groups, the following and filming of journalists by 'evidence gatherers' in an attempt to intimidate those who might report against Police activities.

This is not in any way to denigrate individuals on these forums who happen to be Police. I am sure they are decent individuals doing a good job to protect us from crime and they deserve thanks, respect and decent working conditions on that basis.

So how can we be sure 'protest groups' are law abiding until we check...? I suppose we could just ask them, but sometimes people have been known to tell lies to hide criminal activities.

And Journalists, would these be mainstream or ones considered to have an agenda where the ability to prove their stories as inaccurate from footage from evidence gathers...?

Just to make sure they are law abiding the policemen fathered children by them and were themselves the main instigators of criminal activity :)

The Journalists were from mainstream broadsheets.

Anyway, this is all off topic from the main point of the thread.

For many years I had the utmost respect for the Police and for the most part still do. I think the point where the public image of the police changed is when the height restrictions were lifted, its very difficult to take a 5ft tall chap seriously.

Good luck. It could be the start of really interesting new chapter in your life. I was a copper a while back ( not Met) but have moved on. Keep an open mind, don't follow the crowd and remember to enjoy yourself. It is a job like any other at the end of the day, and if it is not for you, there is no shame in quitting and trying something else.

Lots of moaning about police on here, me included, but crime generally is as low as it has ever been, and it's dropped particularly in inner cities, so it can't be all bad.

And it has nothing to do with the Police. It is a phenomena across the West, irrespective of criminal justice regimes.

Again, not an attack on individual policemen as they do much good on our behalf I believe.

Seeing as there are a few regulars on here, and apologies for high jacking thread. But need some advice.

There has been a recovery vehicle 'legally abandoned' in our road for 11 weeks now. There are no parking restrictions and a valid tax disc is displayed. It has been reported to Hampshire Police frequently, yet they remain impotent in getting it removed. It is causing a hazard for the poor couple who have the unfortunate pleasure of having it outside their house as they cannot see the road to exit the drive. And the lady opposite had to be taken to hospital in an emergency a couple of weeks back and it caused an obstruction for the ambulance to manoeuvre.
All the Hants Police call centre will reveal is that the owner is based in Bournemouth area which is Dorset Police and therefore not the jurisdiction of Hants to make contact. Me thinks I and others are being fobbed off.

Any chance of one you can PNC a reg number and give me the owners details. Would love to call him and tell him that his lorry is going to be torched unless its removed tout de suite. Which is what I and others in the road feel like doing.

So somebody has quite legally parked a vehicle on 'your' road and as an ex-special you think the police should bend the rules to help you out???

No wonder the police struggle to maintain a reasonable reputation

It's not legally parked though as it's causing an unnecessary obstruction by the sounds of it due to it hampering the old couple's view.

The road outside your house does not belong to you, unless there are parking restrictions other people can park there, whether it spoils your view or not.

No, 'view' at in it restricts someone's ability to get out safely. That is an unnecessary obstruction.

If it was a real obstruction and it has been reported to Hampshire Police then I'm sure they would have sorted it out. If they hadn't then it's no excuse for taking the law into your own hands (or maybe that's OK if you used to be a special??)

You'd hope so. But I can only go off what he said. Maybe he's exaggerating and they have checked it out and it's fine. :?

And I wholeheartedly agree with the second bit! No excuse.

Late wade in, given that it's still on the first page.

I joined the job straight out of university in 2000 - got through probation fine but realised it wasn't for me, and left. 70% of my intake at NPT have now also left. My time in taught me a massive amount about life and gave me a number of skills which I continue to use today. My previous colleagues who are still in seem to have mixed views - those who are working in specialist departments love it, those who are reactive hate it (in general). I agree with previous posts saying it's still a job, but it requires a certain mindset to do it and a massive amount of patience / tolerance re: management.
