Mis-aligned rear mech

Rear mech is out of line with the chainline / rear cassette, mainly in the sense that the lower of the two small cogs in the rear derailleur is inboard of where it should be (and possibly rotated slightly askew too).

I'm presuming this is due to the mech assembly being whacked and bent, as I can't visibly see that the mech hanger itself is out of line. But given that a small variation in the mech hangar would be exaggerated at the furthest away point (the lower cog), how do I tell which part is out of line? Don't want to go bending / stressing the cog assembly if replacing the mech hanger would do the job, but conversely don't want to go changing the mech hanger if I don't need to.

I could of course buy loads of new parts, but I'm starting to get fed up with doing that!! (It's my son's bike (again!))

Please take a photo from the rear showing the mech/hanger/frame alignement and post it for some sensible comments.

It could be a bent hanger or bent mech, the hanger is easy enough to check by removing and placing against a flat edge, depending on the bike it may also be the cheapest to fix!

Hanger looks straight, If its out of line, it's a tiny amount, just use it as long as it shifts OK, looks more twisted slightly than out of line, probably caught on something.

    Spesh?

Apart from all the red, the mech hanger is a dead giveaway!

If it shifts OK, just keep using it.
