Gear cable O rings.

Hello All
Not exactly a road bike question but here goes. Going to replace the gear cable and outers on my Spez hybrid and wondered where exactly the O rings go that come with the cable kit. I presume they stop water / dirt penetration to the inner housing but see videos of cable being fitted with no mention of them. I have re indexed my rear gears and they are reasonably sharp but think that after 3 years of all year commuting the changing would be slicker with new cables.
Many thanks all.

O rings?
Or the donuts? The donuts are just for putting on the top tube run to stop rattles."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
