Garmin Edge Touring: Following a Planned Course...

I want to use my Edge purely for following courses which I compose on Garmin Connect and then download to the device.

I tried this last Saturday with mixed results. As soon as I deviated from the course the screen went dark and it asked me if it could recalculate. I said yes, hoping that it would navigate me as quickly as possible back on to the set course. However, what it actually did was compose an entirely new (and unwanted) course to my ultimate destination, I'm talking a full 60 miles. The turn by turn directions were thereafter based on this new course, as shown by a thick purple line on the map. My original course was still shown as a narrow purple line a shade darker, but with no directions.

Is there any way to prioritise my specified course and limit the device's initiative to purely getting me back on track asap?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Yes - don't allow recalculation - but it does mean you have to find your own way back to the preset course ...

Best advice I can give is read this tutorial http://www.forgot.co.uk/edge-800/, especially the bit about using Ridewithgps for planning your route. It takes a little bit of getting used to but is pretty intuitive and best of all free if you don't mind downloading the course and putting it on your Garmin manually. The guide will explain all the settings you need including not to allow re-calculation. :)

I have gone off track, i have just zoomed out a little and headed in the general direction using other roads. Daft but using the sun on one side of my face and eventually ended back on the track lines on the screen. Had to do this when garmin connect sent me down green lanes and a deep ford near Rugby!!
