Hi

Can someone please educate me as to what kind of cranksets are compatible with my bike?

The description on the website says: BB86 structured oversized bottom bracket? The crankset is an inhouse MEKK Compact Alloy 50/34 172.5mm

I've attached a pic, hope it helps..

I've noticed that most higher end carbon bikes have BB30 bottom brackets which are fitted with Shimano offerings?

I would like to upgrade my crankset, and probably go with a 175mm, as I want to keep my saddle a little lower, but I am not sure if my BB shell will fit the Shimano offerings?

My bike is equipped with 105 front and rear derailers, a KMC chain, and shimano (non 105) cassette.

Many thanks

BB86 refers to the width of the BB shell 86mm, the bore diameter of the BB shell, should be 41mm and it should be a press fit type, no internal threading. The BB bearing I.D. (inside diameter) should be 24mm, to match the O.D. (outside diameter) of the crankset axle. So you could fit any of the Shimano HT 2 cranksets. If you remove your cranks you will be able to confirm this and see what BB is fitted.

Shimano HollowTech 2, it is the registered trade name for their cranksets, Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, Dura Ace and Non series FC type. You could try contacting Mekk and ask them what BB they fit before you start dismantling things.

HollowTech refers to the hollow axle used in the crank assembly see the exploded diagram

Note that the BB shown there is an external HT2 type for use with a threaded BB shell.

  • I hope you don't mind me jumping into this thread. I have to change my chainset/crankset for a shorter one. I spoke to my LBS and they advised me that the Shimano 105 HT2 should fit ok, however this thread suggest otherwise? Do I need to get a different chainset or a new BB or what?

Also, having real problems removing my crank arms, any tips?

To the OP, Shimano categorically don't make a BB30 crankset for good reason - it's a crock.

    connor,

Hopefully the OP will be along shortly to update you as to whether he changed his crankset, if so he should be able to tell you if the Shimano HollowTech II crankset fits the MEKK BB. IF the MEKK BB has an Bearing I.D. of 24mm then your LBS are correct. If you do manage to remove your crankset you will be able to measure the bearing I.D.

When your LBS says" HT2 should fit ok", you really need to be certain of this before you spend money on one. You could contact MEKK directly, contact details are on their website, they should also be able to tell you how to remove the crankset.

If you don't get a response here, try posting in the Workshop Forum, sorry but I can't advise you on how to remove your crankset as I'm not familiar with MEKK bikes.

When I removed the Crankset on my MEKK it was a similar system used by FSA and Campagnolo. In fact its just the same thing re-branded.
Easy to remove. Have a look online.

You have to undo the silver tension cap / lock nut and the non- drive crankarm. Once you do that the arm is free to move off the splined spindle. You then tap the spindle through so the Drive side comes away and you can then pull the whole thing off.

That's mis-leading - they're different designs and certainly not inter-compatible or made by each other.

To remove, unscrew the hex (probably 8mm) on the non-drive side - crank should simply slide off. Tap the end of the exposed spindle firmly with a mallet and the crank spider should slide out. BB may be compatible with Shimano, but you might not be able to tell until you try fitting one and see if you can adjust-out any play. Worst case scenario is also having to buy a Shimano BB86 BB.
