Did my first long ride in forever since some bad knee problems, I was just five minutes short of a four hour ride, lovely weather conditions and it was fantastic to be out and about. .......however.
Put my mobile in my back pocket, got back from the ride, checked the Strava and....didn't start the bloody thing!!!! Now I know that I still did the ride but still...I would like to have known the distance and average speed.

Its basically like it never happened. It's well known that if you don't log your ride on Strava it was pointless and you don't gain any fitness.0

That's what I feared.0

There is still just about 4hrs of daylight. Get out there and do it again.0

you know how long it took, you know where you went, use some mapping site to plot the route, speed = distance / time, job done. not exact but better than nothing.www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0

I must forget to use Strava on about 40% of my rides.
The worst thing is getting home to find you ran out of battery on strava.
Has happened twice with me, a 5hr ride drained my battery once because I also used the maps and text facilities on the phone. Another time I got back to find my battery had crashed because the phone was in a low signal area, data was switched on and using full accuracy location settings (gps, cell tower & wifi triangulation)0 -
i know how you feel. my strava on android regularly does this. it will record time but no distance!
bugs the hell out of me especially when i have pushed on a known segment0 -

best thing to do and longer rides is put the phone in areoplane mode (disables wifi and mobile signal), close any apps that may be open so strava is left to just use GPS tracking.
If location settings are set on high accuracy the phone uses cell towers and wifi points along with GPS if it looses signal which can drain the battery to hell, esp if in low signal areas.0 -
Get a Garmin 200 edge for about 80 quid (ish) they are great and last for ages. Never missed a ride with it!!0

Plot it on a software and you get the distance. If you remember what time you left and came back, you get the average speed too.left the forum March 20230 -
See this thread: viewtopic.php?f=40013&t=12968050I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0

My garmin does what it is designed to do and my phone sits in my back pocket in case of an emergency.. Never missed a ride in 12k miles...0

My Garmin 800 lost reception at some point before a steady 2k climb on Strava that I paced to perfection despite 100k in my legs. Gutted I was, gutted.0

Sorry, but I have to ask. Was that a serious post? :?
Did he say he used a Power Meter to pace it to perfection?I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles0 -
That's why I got myself an Edge 500 shortly after getting a smartphone (although I'd been thinking about it for a while anyway) to replace my old cycle computer. I have a screen set up with the info I would have previously noted into a log book that I look at when I'm back, so even without Strava I'm happy.
Although I find Strava to be the easiest way of keeping track of the milage of different bikes now...0 -
Yes a bit annoying if you like to scrutinise your stats... I got myself an Edge 510 and is great, battery is long lasting too.
Sometimes I don't take it with me be just enjoy the ride without looking at cadence, etc. it's easy to forget how enjoyable just riding a bike is...

I guess this post shows why the world is full of people who cant ride a bike, hit pot holes, unable to navigate their way around some gravel.....in fact just like the grp of cyclists I met today..more interested in stats than the enjoyment of riding a bike in beautiful countryside...... so, is anyone going to get snogged by some podium girls based on a Strava segment? as Dennis said "you cant be serious!"0

Only in my fantasies...0

God forbid people ride their bike under different motivations than you. How dare they.0 -
What is this Strava I hear people talking about all the time? I know its something to do with time trials but not sure exactly.0
