Smartphone Instead of GPS?

Morning everyone,
With the new Garmin Edge 1000 coming out, I'm considering replacing my ever reliable Edge 800. I'm tempted by the Edge 1000 and have looked at Mio's offerings too; there are clearly some interesting devices out there.
My question is, does anyone use a Smartphone as an alternative to a GPS unit? I’ve seen the Sony Experia Z1 Compact which is waterproof which looks like it might be an option. However, is there an app or apps which can provide route mapping as you go? I’ve always used the mapping on the Edge 800 when riding alone in new places, so this feature would be a must. Does anyone know if a Smartphone can show a pre-planned route and mapping whilst riding?
Thanks!

A smartphone can do offline mapping and live routing , the app I use is OSMAND, i am sure there are others.
Gpx files can be downloaded to your phone and used by osmand to give directions.

The RideWithGPS app does all the navigation stuff. It might need a data connection for the maps. I'm not sure. There will be others. I would always prefer to use a Garmin or similar device though as it is easier to mount them on a bike and I'm not draining my phone battery in case I need it.0

I tried it once and have found you only get 3-4 hours of battery time (if that) when using a smart phone with GPS, location and the screen on. In summer, you cant see the screens that well unless your brightness is up = battery drain. Power supply is something to bare in mind.
I would get a dedicated device imo.0 -

I would agree 100% with this. I just use the phone as a backup if needed. (it never has been).0 -

There is life without Garmin:
- iPhone
- Quad Lock bar mount
- Anker Astro mini battery charger (cable tie to stem or under top tube, gives 6 hrs plus with display on)
- Apps (Strava, MotionX GPS, iCardio with HRM)
Works a treat!0
