I need help with my Garmin 810 :(

Recently upgraded from a 500 to an 810, for the mapping system and so the Mrs can follow me via livetrack when I go out alone but after initial set up I seem to be experiencing some faults and wondered if anyone on here can help me please.

Firstly I plotted a course via Garmin Connect and then went to save to device, this didnt work as the Connect website took me to the sign in page even though I was already in, I typed my details in again and that was the end of that, the site locked up and the screen went blank. I did this a couple of times with the same outcome so gave up.

Next I plotted the same route with ridewithgps and exported the course with GPX tracks, checked on the 810 and there it is so that worked OK and the route was exactly as I had entered it. Started the ride this morning with 100% battery on 810 and my Galaxy S4 and as soon as I left home the Garmin asked me to take different directions to the route I had uploaded. The 810 did this for most of the first 50 miles which apart from being quite irritating if I hadnt have known the local roads I could have ended up anywhere! When it was working properly it would give me turn by turn beeps and the arrow followed the road I was on. After about 50 miles the 810 locked up solid with an image of where I was on the screen, the touch screen didnt function and neither did the start/stop button. I didnt switch it off mind you as hoped it would store the route I had ridden so I carried on home.

On getting home I checked with the Mrs who had been following me via livetrack and she had the whole route on her Ipad so from that I gather some parts of the 810 were still working just not the mapping. I have tried to upload to Garmin Connect and it constantly spins on uploading. I moved to Strava and tried the upload, all worked fine with the whole route in place. The 810 itself shows no rides saved or ridden and the route I downloaded from ridewithgps has loads of other lines on it that I never put there so no wonder the 810 was trying to send me all over the place.

Any ideas what I should do please as I thought this was going to be a good investment but so far I am pretty disappointed.

Have you got a link to both the gpx file from ridewithgps and the fit file of the course on your 810?

    What maps are loaded?.

What do you have the routing options set to?

Have you reviewed the course on the garmin and if so what options did you set?

You don't want to allow the GPS to recalculate the route - never. It buggers everything up.

Here is the course I uploaded from ridewithgps and excuses for me being dim but I dont know what you mean or how to get the fit file from the 810?.

    http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4603418

The unit came with base maps as standard and with it I bought the actual Garmin European city navigator mini sd card so that should be correct?

In the settings for that course on the 810 it says virtual partner on and the off course warnings on. Anything else that I should be looking at?

The GPS did recalculate the route whilst I rode as I did make a wrong turn but then when I got myself back on the correct road it said "course found".

Just noticed I am on firmware 2.7 and not the new version 3, should I do this?

If you look in the courses folder you will find your course with a file type of fit.
    i.e. MAY BH WKEND TEST.fit

Found the FIT file but when I either try to copy and paste it here or open it nothing happens apart from our pc saying it Windows cannot open the file. The date against it is yesterday which is when I made the course. Sorry but computers are not my strong point :(

I have just been through the menus on the 810 and found in the routing section recalculation was on, so I have switched that off. Lock on Road was off so that has been switched on and also the section in the avoidance setup showed all the sub sections like toll roads, major highways were all on so I have switched them off too.

Go to scarlet fire , fool proof instructions ( for 800, I'm sure there will be help fir 810). I had similar problems, all user error. You will find how to load free os maps, routes and what settings. I struggled for weeks, eventually cracked it with the help of that website. Good luck.

Thanks for this Quins, I will take a look.

Report back from this mornings 810 efforts. Managed to draw route and export into the 810 successfully from Garmin Connect this time which I am pleased with. All was going really well with no off course diversions being given to me. The on screen map was tracking all the roads and junctions correctly until I got to about half way into my 40 mile loop. Whilst scrolling between the map screen and the others I accidentally swiped down rather than across the 810 screen. A list of turn directions appeared, I swiped sideways and it went away, the map still continued to follow my route but the turn by turn direction at the top of the screen locked up. It stayed with the same message for probably the next 15 or so miles then suddenly sprang back to life again and directed me home as it was meant to do. Any idea what I may have touched to stop the directions but not the maps?

When I got home the 810 said "course completed" or whatever it was (lol) and I have downloaded it to Strava with no errors. I will try putting it on Garmin Connect once I have finished writing this.
